Understanding Therapy Approaches

Common therapy approaches explained

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. Evidence-based and structured. Great for anxiety, depression, and specific challenges.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Combines CBT with mindfulness. Emphasizes emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Often used for intense emotions and relationship challenges.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Explores how past experiences and unconscious patterns influence present behavior. Insight-oriented and reflective.

Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Incorporates meditation, breath work, and present-moment awareness. Helps with stress, anxiety, and emotional regulation.

Person-Centered/Humanistic

Non-directive approach that emphasizes empathy, acceptance, and personal growth. Client leads the direction of therapy.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

Goal-oriented and focused on solutions rather than problems. Practical and time-limited.

Trauma-Informed Care

Recognizes the impact of trauma and creates a safe, empowering therapeutic environment. May include EMDR or somatic approaches.
